Decorative paint finishes
Texture, depth and sheen are best judged on a sample. A decorative finish should be selected for its setting and the surface beneath it.
Start with a reference and a sample
Bring a photograph or material reference showing the effect you have in mind. Discuss the colour, texture, sheen and light in the room before a system is proposed.
A sample records the agreed appearance. It should be viewed alongside surrounding finishes and considered at the scale of the intended wall or joinery.
Confirm the preparation required
- Identify the surface and its existing coating.
- Discuss irregularities that may show through the proposed finish.
- Agree a sample and the limits of any natural variation.
- Record maintenance and repair considerations for the chosen system.
Separate decoration from other performance needs
A decorative appearance does not establish suitability for every location. Where a surface has specific moisture, cleaning or other performance requirements, confirm the full system with the product supplier.
Specialist applications are assessed individually. Describe the intended use when you enquire so that suitability and scope can be discussed.
Compare the actual products
Matt, eggshell, satin and gloss describe broad finish categories. Read the selected product’s information for its intended surfaces, preparation and care.
Compare samples in the room, including along a wall or moulding where the light catches the surface. Consider how the finish sits beside floors, fabrics and fittings.
Keep a clear record
- Manufacturer and exact product range.
- Colour reference and finish name.
- Primer and preparation system.
- Locations where each product is used.
