Interior painting

Walls, ceilings and woodwork considered together. The starting point is the condition of the room, the way it is used and the finish you want to live with.

Start with the surface

A new colour will not resolve loose paint, damaged plaster or an underlying damp problem. Tell us about cracks, staining and recent repairs so that preparation can be discussed before a finish is selected.

In a period interior, cornices, picture rails, shutters and skirting need their own preparation allowance. A quotation should distinguish these details from straightforward wall painting.

Set a room-by-room scope

  • Identify each wall, ceiling, door and item of woodwork to be included.
  • Record the existing coating and any areas requiring further investigation.
  • Agree protection for floors, furniture, fittings and adjoining rooms.
  • Specify colours, sheen levels and the proposed paint system.

Plan around the household

Tell us which rooms need to remain usable and whether furniture can be moved. Access, ventilation, drying intervals and the order of work should be agreed before dates are confirmed.

Sample colours in the room alongside flooring, fabrics and joinery. The same colour can read differently across a wall and through the day.

Record the condition

Photograph the whole wall as well as cracks, flaking paint, stains and repaired areas. Note whether a defect is new or has returned after earlier decoration.

If the wall has recently been plastered, retain the installer’s information and the proposed paint manufacturer’s guidance. The correct preparation depends on the surface and system.

View samples where they will be used

Compare a sample on more than one wall and look at it through the day. Use the room’s normal lighting in the evening as well as natural daylight.

Bring flooring, fabric and joinery references into the comparison. A colour should be considered alongside the materials you intend to keep.

Record what you can observe

Note where the mark appears, when you first noticed it and whether it changes. Photographs of the wider area and any earlier repairs can help explain the issue.

Avoid guessing the cause from the colour or position of a stain alone. Arrange appropriate assessment where the underlying problem is unclear.

Resolve the repair responsibilities

Discuss who will investigate and address the underlying issue, and what information is needed before decoration can proceed. This may involve the owner, building manager or another professional.

Keep the repair scope separate from surface preparation and painting so that responsibilities and timing are clear.

Discuss the work in your area

Tell us the full postcode, property type and surfaces involved. The scope and arrangements are confirmed for your enquiry.

Your next step

Tell us what needs decorating.

Share the rooms, surface condition and full postcode. Photographs and a short description help us understand the work before discussing a quotation.
