Exterior painting
A clear exterior specification starts with the building fabric. Masonry, timber and metalwork need separate consideration, from access through to the final coating.
Inspect before repainting
Describe flaking paint, open joints, staining or damaged timber when you enquire. Repairs and the cause of recurring defects need to be considered separately from the decorative finish.
A sound specification identifies which surfaces can be prepared and coated, which need repair, and which need further advice before work is priced.
Make access part of the quotation
- List elevations, front doors, window frames, railings and other included surfaces.
- Discuss scaffold or other suitable access separately from painting.
- Check arrangements for neighbouring entrances, shared paths and public areas.
- Allow for the conditions and drying intervals required by the selected coating.
Retain the character of the frontage
For a listed building or a property in a conservation area, establish the relevant constraints before changing colours or coatings. Consent requirements are specific to the building and proposed work.
Existing finishes, retained details and agreed sample areas should be recorded so that the intended result is clear before the main work starts.
Keep a condition record
Take photographs of each elevation and note where coatings are peeling, joints are open or staining has appeared. Compare with earlier photographs if available.
Include window sills, door edges and railings in the brief, together with any areas that are difficult to see safely from ground level.
Discuss the work in your area
Tell us the full postcode, property type and surfaces involved. The scope and arrangements are confirmed for your enquiry.
Your next step
Tell us what needs decorating.
Share the rooms, surface condition and full postcode. Photographs and a short description help us understand the work before discussing a quotation.
