Period property decorating
Older surfaces deserve a measured specification. Start with the existing materials and retained detail, then consider preparation and compatible finishes.
Understand the existing fabric
Age alone does not determine the correct paint system. The substrate, previous coatings, surface condition and moisture issues all need to be understood.
Discuss fragile plaster, cornices, panelling and earlier decorative finishes before agreeing preparation. Where specialist conservation advice is needed, establish that before work is committed.
Record decisions before work starts
- Identify significant details and surfaces to retain.
- Provide any list entry, conservation guidance or relevant consent.
- Agree the proposed preparation and coating system.
- Use a sample area where the finish or compatibility needs assessment.
Keep advice specific to the building
A decorating proposal should not be treated as confirmation of planning or listed building consent. Ask the relevant authority about the proposed work where the position is unclear.
Our period property guide sets out the information to gather before discussing decoration.
Discuss the work in your area
Tell us the full postcode, property type and surfaces involved. The scope and arrangements are confirmed for your enquiry.
Your next step
Tell us what needs decorating.
Share the rooms, surface condition and full postcode. Photographs and a short description help us understand the work before discussing a quotation.
